HANDS THAT SERVE

CINEMATOGRAPHER

'Hands that serve' is a documentary about the people behind traditional bamboo craftsmanship the patience, skill, and effort that goes into creating something entirely by hand.

For this project, I wanted the visuals to feel as honest and natural as the people and their work. I shot the entire documentary handheld using natural light, keeping the camera close to the subjects and their process. I used intimate close-ups to capture their hands, expressions, and the small details of their craft, while wider frames helped show their surroundings and the space they work in.

Since I didn't want the visuals to feel too staged or polished, I mostly focused on observing what was happening and finding the right moments to capture. Working only with natural light also made me pay more attention to how I was positioning the camera and using the light that was already there.

This project made me realise how much I enjoy documentary cinematography.  being present, observing people, and finding the visuals within what is already happening.

Camera: Canon R8
